After being absent for almost 30 years, GM is now preparing to reintroduce the Chevy El Camino SS for the US market as a 2018 model year. As we know that the El Camino was first hit the market in 1959 to fill the coupe utility pickup segment. The car relies on a front engine layout coupled to a rear-wheel drive configuration. However, for the next-generation models, the 2018 Chevy El Camino SS is predicted to use the same platform as the Australian-Specs Holden Commodore Ute. It’s targeted to compete with the Ford Ranchero pickups whose sales were quite successful in the US at that time.
There has been too much speculation about the upcoming El Camino SS which one of them thinks of it as a rebadged version of the Holden Commodore Ute which is currently on sale in the Australian market. The Holden Ute is coupe utility pickups based on a Chevy Lumina Ute, which is currently marketed in the Middle East and South Africa. Speaking of its concept, the 2010 Pontiac G8 ST Concept introduced at the 2008 New York Auto Show was originally claimed to be the successor of the Chevrolet El Camino. This concept car is based on the same platform as the Holden Ute with GM Zeta platform (GM-G8) support and it’s the only coupe utility pickup that utilizes the same body style and design language as the El Camino.
2018 Chevy El Camino Specs
Under the hood, this concept car is powered by a standard 6.0-liter V8 engine that can deliver at least 361 horsepower. The automaker also offers a direct-injected 3.6-liter V6 engine with peak output up to 300 horsepower. Although this car will initially be sold around the year 2010 in North America, however the Pontiac G8 ST has never been manufactured until today. The 2010 Pontiac G8 ST is predicted to be the successor for the Chevy El Camino as the first utility coupe vehicle in the US after the Detroit carmaker halted its production in 1987. However, it was only nonsense and absurd, since GM announced in January 2009 that they will never produce Pontiac G8 ST because of its production cost issue.
Based on the current Holden Ute SS model, the 2018 Chevy El Camino will most likely be powered by a 6.2-liter LS3 V8 engine with peak output reaching 407 horsepower (304 Kw) at 6,000 rpm and 570 Nm of torque at 4,400 rpm. This 6.2L V8 engine is claimed to have a fuel economy rating of 13,6 liter/100 km. There are two transmission options offered by General Motors, including standard six-speed automatic with Active Select and six-speed manual transmission which is only available as optional, complete with standard Limited Slip Differential.
2018 Chevy El Camino Price and Release Date
The upcoming El Camino SS is expected to be available with several safety features which include Lane Departure Warning, Automatic Park Assist and Forward Collision Alert. As for the interior features, this new model should offer some interior features similar to the Holden Ute SS such as Chevy’s MyLink Infotainment System with 8-inch touch-screen, Dual-Zone Climate Control, Bluetooth Audio Streaming and Full iPod Integration.
Release date and price havn’t been announced for the 2018 Chevy El Camino. However, this coupe utility vehicle pickup is likely to arrive at US dealerships around the beginning of next year with an estimated price range from $30,000 – $40,000. And of course, the next-gen El Camino will most likely be based on the same platform as the Chevrolet Lumina Ute and Holden Ute.
