Entering the first half of 2014, Ford has prepared a series of updates for the Expedition SUV before the new models hit the market sometime later this year. However, GM has gone ahead to revise the Chevy Tahoe and Suburban last year. But as we know, the Dearborn automaker seems to be a lot of work for the next-gen Mustang since last year. So, expect the Expedition will get a major update this year.
What we know so far is that the 2015 Ford Expedition will likely be equipped with a Twin-Turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 EcoBoost engine, which will essentially borrowed from the current F-150. Better fuel efficiency and more output may be a deciding factor to replace the old V8 engine with a new V6 EcoBoost engine. The current model still relies on a 5.4-liter SOHC V8 engine with a maximum output of up to 310 horsepower and 365 lb-ft of torque.
The EPA fuel economy rating is slightly less satisfactory because the current Expedition (RWD) can only returns 14 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway, while the 4WD model is rated at 13 mpg in the city and 18 mpg on the highway. So, a new 3.5-liter V6 EcoBoost engine is the right solution to make the 2015 Expedition becomes more powerful and still fuel efficient, rather than continue to use the old V8 engine.
Rated at 365 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque, the new EcoBoost engine can return at least 16 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway for the rear-wheel drive models. With four-wheel drive setup, the upcoming model will return 15 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway. However, it’s an EPA data that has been tested and proven right in the 2014 Ford F-150.
The 2015 Ford Expedition SUV will reportedly be offered with a six-speed automatic transmission, while the rear-wheel drive setup will remain standard on the vehicle. In addition, you also can order the four-wheel drive if you want but it may be offered only as optional, so you should consider it in terms of price as well. This is just my advice. 😀
Regardless of engine specs, the exterior will get a redesign, while the interior layout will be revised and updated, particularly in terms of features. However, we’re guessing this new model will not get a significant redesign on its exterior and Ford might just want to revise some areas already look outdated. Some exterior changes we can mention here, including a new larger grille design, more upright front fascia and get a new exhaust pipe.
The interior design will get a modern twist and a redesigned center stack featuring a silver lining. Ford is rumored to put some new interior features such as a new instrument cluster, updated stop-start system and restyled steering wheel. Some other updates will come and adopt new technology features such as MyFord Touch, new push button start and larger touchscreen display. Storage space will be retained at the top of the dash, but no design changes to the gear knob, even don’t expect to see the touch-sensitive buttons.
As for the release schedule, the 2015 Ford Expedition Release Date is allegedly scheduled for later this year, with sales likely to begin early next year. It’s too early to talk about the price, but for me it’s not a problem if we just post a price estimate. We predict the base price for the new Expedition will start at around $42,665, considering the current model is priced at $41,635, while the 2013 model hit the U.S. market with a starting price of $40,605.
Meanwhile, the 2015 Ford Expedition EL is predicted to go on sale with a price tag around $45,375, including destination charge and handling fee. As you know, the current Expedition XLT EL goes on sale in the United States with a starting MSRP of $44,345, while the 2013 Expedition EL models priced at $43,315. However, this is only a price estimate and not entirely accurate. Official pricing details will be announced closer to the release date.
